Designing with wood

N5 Design & Manufacture

Overview

Wood is clearly a fantastic material. Wood comes in all different types both natural and manufactured and is mostly sustainable. Wood forms the basis of many projects in Design and Manufacture and I spend a great deal of time trying to get pupils interested and excited about this timeless material. Here are some resources I use with classes.

Okay. The basics. Wood comes from trees. Simple enough, right? Well, there is a lot more to wood than first meets the eye. These introductory notes will help you learn the basics about this wonderful material...

The wood lathe

The wood lathe is probably one of my favorite tools. I have a small Denford Viceroy lathe in my home workshop, and I turn to this lovely tool whenever I want to relax.

Pupils need to know about the wood lathe for the course exam. However, knowing how to use the wood lathe opens up opportunities for pupils to design and make more interesting products. Either way, here are some resources to help with the topic.
